208/230V, 60 Hz, Single Phase

  • Minimum circuit ampacity: 38.5A
  • Maximum fuse or breaker size: 60A

208/230V, 60 Hz, Three Phase

  • Minimum circuit ampacity: 31A
  • Maximum fuse or breaker size: 50A

Confirm the exact electrical configuration being ordered. Electrical service, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, disconnects, grounding, and bonding must follow the unit data plate, installation manual, and applicable codes.

Installation must be completed by qualified professionals.

Water Flow and Plumbing

The approved water-flow range is 30–70 GPM.

A heater bypass kit is required when system flow can exceed 70 GPM.

Installation should follow the proper equipment sequence:

Pool → Circulation Pump → Filter → Heat Pump → Chemical-Feeding Equipment → Pool

Additional considerations include:

  • Use properly sized pool plumbing
  • Confirm inlet and outlet orientation
  • Maintain the required water flow
  • Install chemical feeders and salt chlorine generators downstream
  • Use a check valve where necessary to prevent concentrated chemicals from flowing backward into the heat pump
  • Provide service access around the unit
  • Adjust or supplement the water-pressure switch when required by the installation
  • Winterize the heat pump in sustained freezing conditions

Installation Requirements

The SQ140R is designed for outdoor installation with unrestricted airflow.

The unit should be:

  • Installed on a stable and level equipment pad
  • Positioned with adequate side and overhead clearance
  • Located where discharged air cannot recirculate into the evaporator coil
  • Protected from direct irrigation and concentrated roof runoff
  • Kept away from stored pool chemicals and corrosive fumes
  • Accessible for inspection and service
  • Installed close enough to the pool equipment to minimize unnecessary plumbing resistance
  • Provided with proper condensate drainage

Exact clearance requirements and installation procedures must follow the current AquaCal installation manual and applicable local codes.

Corrosion-Proof Cabinet

The SQ140R uses a rust- and fade-resistant cabinet designed for outdoor pool-equipment environments.

Louvered side panels help protect the evaporator coil while maintaining airflow, and the impact-resistant housing includes an integrated drain pan for condensation management.

Condensation

Condensation draining from the base of the heat pump is normal during operation.

The amount of water produced varies with temperature and humidity and may sometimes appear similar to a plumbing leak. The equipment pad must allow condensation to drain away from the unit.

Water Chemistry

Proper water chemistry is essential for long-term equipment life.

Recommended residential pool levels include:

  • Chlorine: 1–3 ppm
  • Bromine: 2–6 ppm
  • Cyanuric acid: 30–50 ppm
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Calcium hardness: 200–400 ppm
  • Total dissolved solids: 0–1,500 ppm, excluding salt from a chlorine generator

Do not allow highly concentrated chemicals or acid-wash water to pass through the heat pump.

Choosing the Correct Size

Pool-heat-pump sizing should not be based on pool gallons alone.

Important factors include:

  1. Pool surface area
  2. Geographic location
  3. Average daytime and nighttime temperatures
  4. Humidity
  5. Desired water temperature
  6. Desired swimming season
  7. Wind exposure
  8. Pool-cover use
  9. Required recovery time
  10. Whether heating, cooling, or both are needed

A larger unit may be appropriate when faster recovery, colder-weather operation, a longer swimming season, or higher temperature settings are required.

Electrical Configurations

The SQ140R is available in the following electrical configurations:

208/230V, 60 Hz, Single Phase

  • Minimum circuit ampacity: 38.5A
  • Maximum fuse or breaker size: 60A

208/230V, 60 Hz, Three Phase

  • Minimum circuit ampacity: 31A
  • Maximum fuse or breaker size: 50A

Confirm the exact electrical configuration being ordered. Electrical service, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, disconnects, grounding, and bonding must follow the unit data plate, installation manual, and applicable codes.

Installation must be completed by qualified professionals.

Water Flow and Plumbing

The approved water-flow range is 30–70 GPM.

A heater bypass kit is required when system flow can exceed 70 GPM.

Installation should follow the proper equipment sequence:

Pool → Circulation Pump → Filter → Heat Pump → Chemical-Feeding Equipment → Pool

Additional considerations include:

  • Use properly sized pool plumbing
  • Confirm inlet and outlet orientation
  • Maintain the required water flow
  • Install chemical feeders and salt chlorine generators downstream
  • Use a check valve where necessary to prevent concentrated chemicals from flowing backward into the heat pump
  • Provide service access around the unit
  • Adjust or supplement the water-pressure switch when required by the installation
  • Winterize the heat pump in sustained freezing conditions

Installation Requirements

The SQ140R is designed for outdoor installation with unrestricted airflow.

The unit should be:

  • Installed on a stable and level equipment pad
  • Positioned with adequate side and overhead clearance
  • Located where discharged air cannot recirculate into the evaporator coil
  • Protected from direct irrigation and concentrated roof runoff
  • Kept away from stored pool chemicals and corrosive fumes
  • Accessible for inspection and service
  • Installed close enough to the pool equipment to minimize unnecessary plumbing resistance
  • Provided with proper condensate drainage

Exact clearance requirements and installation procedures must follow the current AquaCal installation manual and applicable local codes.

Corrosion-Proof Cabinet

The SQ140R uses a rust- and fade-resistant cabinet designed for outdoor pool-equipment environments.

Louvered side panels help protect the evaporator coil while maintaining airflow, and the impact-resistant housing includes an integrated drain pan for condensation management.

Condensation

Condensation draining from the base of the heat pump is normal during operation.

The amount of water produced varies with temperature and humidity and may sometimes appear similar to a plumbing leak. The equipment pad must allow condensation to drain away from the unit.

Water Chemistry

Proper water chemistry is essential for long-term equipment life.

Recommended residential pool levels include:

  • Chlorine: 1–3 ppm
  • Bromine: 2–6 ppm
  • Cyanuric acid: 30–50 ppm
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Calcium hardness: 200–400 ppm
  • Total dissolved solids: 0–1,500 ppm, excluding salt from a chlorine generator

Do not allow highly concentrated chemicals or acid-wash water to pass through the heat pump.

Choosing the Correct Size

Pool-heat-pump sizing should not be based on pool gallons alone.

Important factors include:

  1. Pool surface area
  2. Geographic location
  3. Average daytime and nighttime temperatures
  4. Humidity
  5. Desired water temperature
  6. Desired swimming season
  7. Wind exposure
  8. Pool-cover use
  9. Required recovery time
  10. Whether heating, cooling, or both are needed

A larger unit may be appropriate when faster recovery, colder-weather operation, a longer swimming season, or higher temperature settings are required.

Warranty

The current AquaCal limited warranty for the SQ140R provides:

  • 3 years of parts-and-labor coverage
  • Limited parts coverage during years four and five
  • Lifetime limited warranty on the ThermoLink titanium heat exchanger

Coverage is subject to AquaCal’s registration, installation, access, service, water-chemistry, maintenance, and warranty requirements.

Certain travel, access, removal, reinstallation, and special-equipment costs may remain the owner’s responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the SQ140R both heat and cool?

Yes. The SQ140R can heat the pool and actively cool excessively warm pool water.

What is its heating output?

The published output is 114,000 BTU under 80°F water, 80°F air, and 80% relative-humidity conditions.

Can it operate in freezing weather?

Yes. Its IceBreaker design allows continued heating operation at freezing outdoor temperatures. Heating capacity decreases as the temperature falls.

Does it include Wi-Fi?

Yes. Current SQ140R units include built-in PoolSync Wi-Fi capability.

Does it require a separate PoolSync controller?

A separate controller is not required for the unit’s standard built-in PoolSync Wi-Fi functions. Additional PoolSync equipment may be used when integrating and managing other compatible pool-pad equipment.

Is it suitable for saltwater pools?

Yes. Its titanium ThermoLink heat exchanger is suitable for properly maintained saltwater pools. The salt chlorine generator must be installed downstream from the heat pump.

What water flow does it require?

The approved range is 30–70 GPM. A heater bypass kit is required when flow exceeds the maximum.

Is the SQ140R available in three phase?

Yes. It is available in both 208/230V single-phase and 208/230V three-phase configurations.

How quickly will it heat the pool?

Heating time depends on pool size, surface area, starting temperature, outdoor conditions, wind, heat loss, and pool-cover use. Heat pumps are designed for efficient temperature maintenance rather than instant heating.

What is the difference between the SQ140R and SQ200R?

The SQ200R provides greater heating capacity and may be more appropriate for larger pools, colder conditions, faster recovery, or more demanding temperature requirements.
