Hydroxyl-Based Advanced Oxidation

The CCW50 generates hydroxyl radicals that oxidize contaminants within the water system.

Treated air is introduced into the spa or pool’s circulation system through a Venturi injector. This allows the oxidation process to work throughout the body of water while reducing the burden placed on the traditional residual sanitizer.

The CCW50 does not replace proper circulation, filtration, water testing, or water balancing. A sanitizer residual may still be required according to Clear Comfort’s guidance and applicable local regulations.

Best Applications

The CCW50 is designed for:

  • Residential inground spas
  • Small residential pools
  • Therapy pools
  • Exercise pools
  • Small plunge pools with compatible circulation systems
  • Other permanently installed residential bodies of water with flow rates up to 35 GPM

Portable spas, swim spas, and self-contained hot tubs may be better suited to the Clear Comfort CCW25.

Performance Specifications

  • Model: CCW50

The CCW50 should operate only while the circulation pump is running.

Low-Chlorine Water Care

The CCW50 is designed to reduce reliance on traditional chlorine or bromine sanitation.

Potential benefits include:

  • Reduced sanitizer demand
  • Less chemical handling
  • Reduced chemical odor
  • Softer-feeling water
  • More comfortable swimming and soaking
  • Reduced formation of unwanted chloramine-related by-products

Actual chemical reduction depends on water balance, circulation, filtration, bather load, environmental conditions, and ongoing maintenance.

Venturi Injection

The CCW50 introduces treated air into the water through a Venturi injector installed in the return plumbing.

The Venturi must create an air draw of approximately 3–5 LPM. A visible stream of bubbles should enter the spa or pool through at least one return while the system is operating.

If adequate air flow cannot be achieved from the existing circulation system, an optional booster air-pump configuration may be required.

Installation Configuration

A typical installation places the Venturi in the return plumbing after the heater and before water returns to the spa or pool.

The general equipment sequence is:

Spa or Pool → Pump → Filter → Heater → Venturi Injection → Spa or Pool

Depending on the plumbing design, installation may also require:

  • Air tubing
  • Air check valve
  • Flow meter
  • Hartford loop
  • Adjustable bypass valve
  • Booster air pump
  • Mounting brackets
  • Additional plumbing fittings

Exact included components depend on the package purchased. Confirm the system bundle and required accessories before installation.

Air-Flow Requirements

Correct air flow is essential for system performance.

The CCW50 requires approximately 3–5 LPM of air flow through the Venturi injection system.

Air flow should be checked:

  • During initial installation
  • After plumbing changes
  • When water quality changes unexpectedly
  • Periodically during routine maintenance

A dirty filter, restricted plumbing, low circulation speed, or an improperly adjusted Venturi can reduce air flow.

System Status Lights

The front status lights provide basic operating information.

  • Green light: System is powered and operating
  • Yellow light: Cartridge replacement is approaching
  • Red light: Cartridge replacement is required or the system needs attention
  • Blue light: Indicates cartridge operation

Refer to the current Clear Comfort manual when lights flash or display an unfamiliar pattern.

Annual Cartridge Exchange

The CCW50 cartridge is typically exchanged once each year.

The process generally takes about five minutes:

  1. Turn the CCW50 off
  2. Disconnect the cartridge cable
  3. Remove the air tubing
  4. Remove the existing cartridge
  5. Install the replacement cartridge
  6. Replace the air check valve when instructed
  7. Reconnect the tubing and cable
  8. Return the used cartridge through Clear Comfort’s recycling process

The yellow and red status lights help indicate when cartridge replacement is approaching or required.

Circulation and Filtration

The CCW50 must operate during the filtration cycle.

Clear Comfort recommends:

  • Approximately 24-hour circulation with dedicated circulation pumps
  • At least 12 hours per day for programmable two-speed systems
  • Regular filter inspection and cleaning
  • Weekly filter cleaning for heavily used spas
  • Maintaining a consistent stream of bubbles through the return

Insufficient circulation or dirty filtration equipment can reduce system performance and air flow.

Water-Care Guidelines

Clear Comfort recommends beginning with clean, fresh, properly balanced water.

Published spa guidelines include:

  • pH: 7.2–7.4
  • Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Calcium hardness: 50–250 ppm

Additional care includes:

  • Testing and balancing the water regularly
  • Cleaning the filter at least every one to two weeks
  • Cleaning more frequently during heavy use
  • Brushing and wiping surfaces as needed
  • Shocking after high-use periods when necessary
  • Maintaining the appropriate sanitizer residual

Water-care requirements may vary based on the installation, bather load, local regulations, and whether the CCW50 is installed on a pool or spa.

Electrical Requirements

The system should be:

  • Properly grounded
  • Connected to GFCI protection where required
  • Wired or controlled so it operates only with the circulation pump
  • Installed according to all applicable electrical codes
  • Connected by a qualified professional

When connected to independent power, a compatible timer or controller must synchronize operation with the circulation schedule.

What happens if the Venturi cannot create enough air flow?

A booster air-pump kit or another installation configuration may be required.

How often is the cartridge replaced?

The cartridge is generally exchanged annually. The status lights indicate when replacement is approaching or required.

How much electricity does the CCW50 use?

The system uses approximately 10 watts and can operate from either 120V or 230V power.

Does it run continuously?

The CCW50 should run whenever the circulation pump is operating. The required daily circulation time depends on the equipment and application.

Is professional installation recommended?

Yes. Correct plumbing, air flow, electrical control, and Venturi operation are essential to proper system performance.
